What is worth buying when we go rollerblading?

Rolls - the most common injuries

Roller skating is an excellent form of physical activity that brings a lot of pleasure. It allows the overall activity of the body, not only helps to develop endurance and performance of the body, but also perfectly oxygenates it. It also has a positive effect on motor coordination and balance.
Unfortunately, when we skate, we are also subject to accidents and injuries caused by them. It pays to know which parts of our body are most susceptible to damage and how to minimize the risk of injury. Contrary to appearances, it is not difficult at all.

Before we move on to the risks that can happen to us while skating, we would like to point out that it is an activity that we should not give up under any circumstances because we are afraid of it. Rollerblading is a great sport for people who cannot afford regular daily exercise. First of all, unlike running, inline skating doesn't put as much stress on the joints. We can also take a break from training without interrupting our training – even when going downhill. In addition, the rollers perfectly affect the coordination of movements and the sense of balance, stimulating many parts of our body. When horseback riding, we not only make movements with our legs, but also with our hands, and the need to keep our balance also works the muscles that surround our spine and abdominal muscles.

What are the most common rollerblading injuries?

Roller skating may seem like a very simple activity that doesn't require any special skills from us. Unfortunately, this is not entirely true. The support points, the rather narrow rollers, make movement coordination and the ability to adopt the correct posture extremely important. If we don't do this, our center of gravity may be behind - then we fall on our buttocks, which can lead to a coccyx fracture, or front - in which case it's most common wrist and knee injuries.
However, this is not the only problem. There is no denying that our country still lacks places and tracks intended only for inline skaters. Also, even if they exist, they are usually very crowded. So it is not difficult to collide with another person - pedestrian, cyclist or a person moving, for example, on a scooter. Such accidents are particularly dangerous for both parties and can result in serious injury.
An uneven surface or obstacles and dirt on it are also a problem. At high speeds, for example, there is enough sand in the curve so that the skater can no longer brake and loses his balance.

The most common injuries and injuries when skating

We already know what causes roller skate injuries. But what parts of the body of people involved in this activity are harmed? Interesting research on this topic was conducted by the American medical journal "National Electronic Injury Surveillance System". It shows that we are most exposed to hand injuries. In the list of all medical interventions after a fall on roller skates, 24.2% of injuries were affected wrists, 13.5% of the forearms and 7.6% of the elbows, so it can be assumed that almost half of the injuries are to the hands.
Faces and knees come next. Other positions are occupied by:

6.7% of the cube

5.1% abdomen

5,0 % Finger

4.2% Yield

4.1% head

3.8% lower legs

1.8% breast

1.1% of the thigh

1.0% interest rate

0.8% buttocks

0.8% back

0.7% Weapon

0.5% other

0.2% toes.

As you can see, numerous parts of our body can be injured while skating, and a large proportion of them can pose a serious threat and require long-term treatment and rehabilitation. Therefore, it is important to know how to protect yourself from them.

How can injuries be prevented?

There's a lot we can do to minimize the risk of injury while skating. First of all, it is worth choosing places for driving that have a flat surface and are not too crowded with pedestrians and passers-by. It is worth getting acquainted with a particular route by cycling or hiking beforehand. In addition, you should not overestimate your abilities. If we avoid bravado, sharp maneuvers and very high speeds - then it is easier to fall, which can have really serious consequences.
The right equipment is also extremely important. The first element is undoubtedly the helmet. Although Polish law does not require skaters to wear it for good luck, more and more people are choosing to do so. This is a very good decision because head injuries, while not common, can be very serious.

Which inline skating helmet should you choose? The best choice will undoubtedly be a helmet designed specifically for roller skating. We can choose from two models - the first is the popular Peanut. It is a helmet that perfectly protects a very large head area, which is why it is mainly chosen by skaters who perform tricks in skate parks.
The second type is a bicycle type rollerblading helmet. It has an aerodynamic shape that makes it perfect for driving fast. In contrast to bicycle helmets (e.g. MTB helmets), however, it protects the back of the head better. Importantly, wearing a ski helmet on roller skates is not recommended as it is designed to ensure comfort in low temperatures and high humidity. When skating, it just gets too hot for us due to the few ventilation openings.

Another element that we should pay attention to when riding on roller skates are undoubtedly wrist guards. They are very prone to injury as evidenced by the stats posted above. Wrist guards come in two different forms. The first is gloves. These protectors protect the skin from abrasions, but they do not protect joints and bones effectively. Therefore, for security reasons, it is worth choosing the second type of wrist protectors, i.e. H. Models with stiffener. It can be removable or integrated into the protector. In both versions, it protects the wrist from the wrong angle and absorbs the force of impact. An interesting offer are also protectors with gel inserts, which protect the hand area even better and at the same time ensure a comfortable fit.

What other devices can we equip?

Many people who choose to skate also put on elbow and knee pads. Wearing is not necessary but worth buying. They effectively protect not only from abrasions, but also from fractures or sprains of the joints. The cost of buying a set of protectors is not high and the potential benefits of wearing them cannot be overstated.
As a curiosity, we can also mention special shorts that protect the tailbone and hips from breaking or breaking. They have sewn-in cushioning gel pads that significantly reduce the force acting on our body at the moment of impact. Of course, they are not a mandatory part of every skater's equipment, but they are worth considering if we are just starting our adventure in this sport. Falling backwards occurs mainly when learning to skate, when we are not yet able to adopt the correct posture.

To sum up, inline skating is a very good sport that we can use at any age. However, it is important to know that it is also a sport where we can suffer different types of injuries. Proper preparation for horseback riding should therefore be of central importance - for children as well as adults, beginners and advanced.
