Not only insects can effectively prevent us from riding .... read about the advantages of cycling goggles and why it is worth having them in your cycling wardrobe.

Each of us knows it when, during a summer afternoon bike ride, enjoying the light breeze and admiring the stunning nature circumstances, suddenly a stray fly or mosquito gets into our eyes. These small insects can effectively make life difficult for cyclists, taking away all the fun from riding. Moreover, they are quite dangerous for our eyes. In extreme cases, if we are unable to remove the foreign body from the eye ourselves, we have to go to the hospital. There are also cases when professional cyclists had to stop the race because a small insect got stuck in the eye.

Not only insects can effectively prevent us from driving. Fans of more competitive driving, such as Downhill, MTB or Enduro, have probably had to deal with heavy mud or dust coming from under the wheels of competitors many times.

Why is it so important to protect your eyes and how to protect them properly while cycling?

The eyesight is the most delicate and vulnerable organ, which is why it is so important to protect it. When cycling, both purely recreational and more competitive, bicycle goggles or cycling glasses are used to protect the eyes. Today I would like to focus on the former, presenting 7 advantages of cycling goggles.

Bicycle goggles are, next to the helmet, one of the basic elements ensuring the safety of the cyclist. Although they are mainly used by lovers of more competitive forms of riding, they can also be used for normal cycling. The basic advantages of goggles are:

1. Solid protection

Unlike glasses, cycling goggles are able to offer much more protection, thanks to a more fitted shape and a stronger, more massive construction. The goggles also protect the area around the eyes, and in combination with a full face helmet, they successfully protect the entire head. (you will find our offer of full face helmets HERE)

2. Helmet integration

A bicycle helmet and goggles are a perfect combination. Thanks to special mounts, we can securely and practically attach our goggles to the bike. Please note that when purchasing goggles, you must ensure that they are compatible with your helmet. What else to pay attention to when choosing goggles, I will write later in the article.

3. UV protection

Many of us often forget about the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays on our eyes. Cycling is a constant exposure to the sun, and therefore to UVA, UVB and UVC. The long-term effects of such exposure are irreversible damage, contributing to serious eye diseases. Most cycling goggles (maybe except for the cheapest ones) provide protection against the main types of harmful radiation: UVA, UVB, UVC. In practice, it is best to look for goggles with the UV400 mark (such a filter provides full protection) or with the mark 100% UVA, UVB, UVC protection.

4. Protection against dust, mud, insects

Cycling goggles provide 100% protection against foreign objects entering our eyes. They cope with both small insects and heavy mud. It is worth noting that some models of goggles are equipped with the so-called skidding. These are replaceable 'tear-offs' in the goggles. They are very often used in motor sports - motocross or speedway. When our viewfinder is heavily soiled, just pull one of these tear-offs from the side, removing it.

5. Replaceable lenses

Outside of tear-offs, cycling goggles usually have a completely replaceable visor. Thanks to this solution, when our glass becomes scratched after some time, we can buy a second one and simply replace it. What's more, thanks to the different colors of such lenses, we can quickly adjust the vision to the conditions outside. If the sun shines strongly, we can use these darker lenses and vice versa, if it is quite dark, we can put on golden or amber lenses, or orange lenses.

6. Goggles not only for the bike

Bicycle goggles are a universal product. You can successfully use it (a helmet too) in winter. If we are also fans of winter sports, nothing stands in the way of using our ski goggles for skiing. Thanks to this solution, we will certainly save money.

7. Better fit, stability and comfort

Cycling goggles are definitely more comfortable than glasses, thanks to mounting them on the helmet we do not have to be afraid that they will fail us at the least expected moment. They are also much more comfortable and fit better to the face.

What cycling goggles? What to consider when buying? – some practical advice:

  • When choosing cycling goggles, pay attention to their size - we distinguish a small frame (for smaller faces), medium and large (for larger, more oval faces)
  • Don't buy cheap goggles, their quality usually leaves much to be desired. Before buying, read the opinions on the Internet, mainly about the ease of scratching the glass, ventilation or wearing comfort. In our store you will find goggles from renowned brands such as 100%, TOUR Whether CAIRN.
  • If you plan to buy goggles and a helmet, be sure to check if they are compatible. Most are universal, but it may happen that due to the unique design, both the goggles and the helmet may not work together. They are usually sold in sets, not allowing for the selection of other equipment.
  • Additional features such as Anti-fog (anti-fog coating), polarizing lenses, Topview technology or the aforementioned UV400 filter are certainly useful. It is worth looking for goggles equipped with them.
  • After putting on the goggles, carefully check if they fit well to the face, do not pinch the nose and under the eyes, and if the field of vision is sufficient (not too limited by the frame)
  • Check that the color of the glasses when it is dark does not make them invisible. (light transmittance)

How to care for cycling goggles?

  • For our goggles to serve us for a long time, it is worth taking care of them properly. Always store them in a dedicated case
  •  If your goggles are equipped with an Anti-Fog coating, do not wipe the inside of them under any circumstances. If you do this, your cycling goggles will definitely start to fog up.
  • To wipe the outside of the glass, use a soft cloth specially designed for this purpose.

Summary

If you are a downhill, MTB or Enduro fan, cycling goggles will definitely be a better choice for you than glasses. Thanks to cycling goggles, you will ensure a high level of safety, noticeable comfort, and if you like to ski down the slopes in winter, buying cycling goggles will kill two birds with one stone.
